For Ryan Baird
This solo piece juxtaposes the full, vibrant sound of the open strings on the bass with the tenser ring of the high range and harmonics. The music begins with an introduction and theme, and is followed by variations becoming more involved on the instrument. Though double stops are not commonly written on the bass, the player is asked to almost constantly be playing two strings at once (one usually being open). The character of the piece is one of momentary angst giving way to a state of repose, and then a mixture of the two (a tried and true formula for slow movements)..
